KINABALU: The Sabah government yesterday reassured that it would not
allow even an inch of the state’s soil to be claimed by any parties.Special Task Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang, in stressing this, said the Sabah government would do its level best to ensure that the interests of the state were protected.
He said this in response to concern raised by Tamparuli assemblyman Datuk Wilfred Bumburing’s over claims made over Sabah by the Sultan of Sulu descendants, which led to a month-long standoff incident at Kampung Tanduo, some 150 kilometres from Lahad Datu.
Speaking when reading the Chief Minister’s Department winding up speech during the 14th State Assembly sitting, here, Teo however disclosed that it was under the federal government’s prerogative on the decision to make the cession money payment to the Sultan of Sulu descendants.
“The state government, however, has confidence that the issue will be handled well by the federal government,” he said.
On the Not To Land (NTL) order on opposition leaders Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tian Chua, Teo explained that the state government had acted based on the considerations made as stipulated in the laws and regulations.
“The state government was advised by security forces that when the banning was imposed, the situation was quite tight in Peninsular Malaysia following the mass illegal assembly initiated by the opposition. To prevent similar incident from happening here, especially since we were celebrating the Kaamatan (Harvest) Festival, we have decided to impose the ban on them from entering Sabah.
“But now that things are back to normal, the state government has lifted the ban,” he said.
Teo said the banning was imposed on those whom the state government thought would be a threat to the security and public order of the state .
“It was just a preventive measure. It was not restricted to the two leaders only but would also be imposed on those whom we feel would bring threats to the state security,” he explained.
He said the security forces would from time-to-time evaluate and investigate such cases, should there be a need to do so.
